This easter egg is one for the most keen-eyed fans of the franchise! Not only was it just a few seconds of screen time overall, the Laura Bailey cameo in The Last of Us season finale was hidden in a few of the hospital scenes, which means the voice actor's face was hidden by a mask the entire time.

Nonetheless, true fans were able to recognize the upper half of the beloved actress' face and also her name in the credits at the end of the episode.

In a press interview, scriptwriters Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann discussed how the cameo for Bailey and the participation of Merle Dandridge, the actor who gave life to the character of Marlene in the video game and the series, came to be:

“We were at the late stages of production, and Merle [Dandrige] came back to play Marlene in the hospital scenes of the last episode. Merle and Laura are great friends, and she visited the set that day. So, we just asked if Laura would like to be one of the nurses and she said "Yes!". [...] It was interesting when Laura toured the set because she cried as soon as she saw the hospital. That, in fact, was something in common for all actors who came from the game. Merle also cried on her first day as Marlene.”

- Craig Mazin explained.

The cameo is even more special because, a little known fact, Bailey also played one of the nurses in the first game, in the motion capture stages.

Furthermore, the scriptwriting duo mentioned this might not be the end of this actress' participations in the series, as she was using a mask and therefore could be recycled into another role:

"Yeah, she is using a mask in the scene, so we can bring her for any role in the next season."

The first season of The Last of Us is available to watch on HBO Max, with a second and third season already confirmed and in the works.
