In the age of the decline of the superhero franchise, as Marvel's Cinematic Universe struggles to stay afloat by trying to make it through with different releases such as Moon Knight and Secret Wars, the DCEU, as the cinematic DC Comics universe is called, will be "soft-rebooting" its franchise with the release of The Flash, which means the story will get rewritten for these iconic superheroes.

Though it is not a novelty move by any chance, as the comic book genre as a whole is defined by a constant rebirth and re-adaptation of their main titles, fans highly expect this to reignite the flame back to DC heroes, as the latest releases of Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods haven't been exactly the box-office successes everyone wanted.

In this new era, James Gunn and Peter Safran, known for their unconventional takes on the movies they are called to produce and create, can completely revamp the DCEU into a new, and, hopefully, more successful universe. As it is a soft reboot, meaning they have creative liberty to keep what they want and throw the rest away, there are still plenty of questions about the movies that will be released before The Flash, as in, before the reboot.

So, what is the last movie in the current DCEU?

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ends this era in the DCEU

The final movie before The Flash runs over everything will be the second installment in the Aquaman solo story, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Highly acclaimed at the time, the first Aquaman solo movie charmed audiences with the lightheartedness of Jason Momoa and the reinterpretation of the iconic hero, while still keeping the core themes that drove this story home for most viewers. Now, the second installment must be the last step before The Flash revamp, showing Aquaman reuniting with his evil brother Orm, the Ocean Master, as they become unlikely friends and protect the earth from an ancient threat.

Before the seriousness of The Flash and the complex timelines storyline, Aquaman will bring fans a comfort place before it's all over, hopefully.

Superman Legacy

After that, and after a break in titles, the DCEU will be reborn by the Jesus-like hero himself, Superman, in Superman Legacylink outside website.

This movie, directed and written by James Gunn, is going to bring a new version of Superman, already established as the hero but much more down-to-earth, unlike the Henry Cavill version. Though there aren't any confirmed actors yet, the movie will star on July 11th 2025. Gunn has described his inspirations for accepting this mantle quite candidly on social media, stating that the call came when he was facing family issues, and he intends to focus on that theme and "kindness in a world that thinks kindness is old-fashioned" for this rebirth.

What Remains

Some new announcements and previous versions are confirmed to remain after The Flash resets the timeline. As the studio has total creative control of the direction they want to go in, they can pick and choose whatever they like to be part of the DCEU's new look; That may include alternative versions that we have already seen on the big screen, such as The Batman, Joker, and many others.

Waller and Blue Beetle, though, are the only actually confirmed inclusions, so far. Viola Davis will continue her role as Amanda Waller, presumably after this character's story unfolds in the spin-off of Peacemaker, and the newest Latino hero, Blue Beetlelink outside website, will be a part of this new DCEU as well.

Many other storylines and small details, roles, and heroes, can be included in the reboot, so the DCEU going down a different road doesn't mean everything will be forgotten and scorched. Many movies in the final phase of the current DCEU can have implications in the future, so predicting what remains and what is gone is a tough task.
