So, who is Blue Beetle, the newest DC hero to come to the big screen?

This not so commonly known hero has already had 3 different versions in the comics since the first Blue Beetle story was published back in 1939. Like many other heroes from this time, after having a few editions, trading from publisher to publisher, and switching characters three times, and eventually, it reached 2023 DC for a new adaptation.

This version of the Blue Beetle is inspired by the most recent character revamp: Jaime Reyes, a young man who goes for a job interview at the beginning of the film and is handed a blue scarab inside a fast food container. He is told not to open it, but as you could imagine, once he’s at home, he opens the box and finds the scarab, which promptly attaches to his body in front of all his family.

Jaime Reyes is one of the most iconic Latino superheroes in media, and the movie brought incredible Latino actors in its cast: George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo are Jamie’s family members. Bruna Marquezine, a Brazilian actress, plays Penny, and Raoul Trujillo is the hero’s villain, Carapax the Indestructible Man.

The main actor, Xolo Maridueña, is known for his work in Netflix’s Cobra Kai as Miguel Diaz.

In the newest trailer, we are shown exactly how the superhero came to be, along with a few fascinating and beautiful effects for the Beetle suit, an exoskeleton not unlike a few certain superhero’s suits around, which brings anything Jaime imagines into life.

One of the key differences from other superhero movies is that Jaime’s family knows from the start what is happening, which is both incredible for representing Latino family-centered culture but also flips the script when it comes to superhero movies.

Susan Sarandon plays the main villain behind Carapax, though we can only see a glimpse of her performance in the trailer.

The movie is set to hit theaters on August 18th. Check out a full trailer here:
